Richard App and Jeff Zimmermann

One week ago I was invited to the Richard App Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a Kendall College Alumni event...which was great since I'm still in high school.  My dad, brother, and I attended the event, and had a great time.  The president of Kendall college was present, and gave a short speech at the beginning.  I apologize for the lack of photos...still testing out the new camcorder.

The owner of the gallery, Richard App, introduced me to an artist from Chicago, Jeff Zimmermann.  Jeff is painting a large mural on the side of Kendall College in Grand Rapids for ArtPrize, and consented to an impromptu interview with me about his project.  Embedded below is the YouTube video of the our interview.  Enjoy!

Matthew Hutchinson

Yesterday I watched Matt Hutchinson, a Grand Rapids artist, work on his ArtPrize project, a 5 foot tall cherry wood vase. He will be displaying it at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.  It really is an amazing piece.  We were able to be there for about 2 hours, getting some great footage.  Above are a few photos that I took.  Some of the video will make its way to YouTube in the next day or two.  I'll be following up with Matt later on, getting an interview and footage of the finished piece.

I've contacted the artists!

Over the weekend I've been put in touch with several artists by the ArtPrize people (thanks Kevin!), and have had a lot of great feedback.

About 12 artists have responded, and all of them have been really interested and helpful.  I have a great group of artists that I'm really looking forward to working with.

So far, my top artists include a bronze sculptor, multi-media mosaics, fantastic paintings, and beautiful woodworks.  It's an eclectic group with wide appeal.  Some artists will be featured here on the blog, while others will be featured more in depth in the documentary.  Through both the blog and the movie, you will get to know these amazing artists, and come to appreciate their artworks.

One more thing.  I'm going to be following various ArtPrize events before and throughout the competition. As I said in a previous post, I have press passes lined up for the top ten and winner announcements, and plan to be at many other events, covering them on the blog. As far as I know, I'm the only teen blogger following ArtPrize to this extent.

Stay tuned!

Press Passes...

So, I've been making phone calls about press passes for the project and finally heard back...

The PR people for ArtPrize have said that they should be able to get me press passes to ArtPrize events, such as the top ten and winner announcements!  This is great, as I'll be able to get a lot closer to the action, and get much better shots.

The pieces are coming together!

Day One

UThink Media is now officially online!

To introduce myself!  My name is Sam.  I'm 17, and an aspiring filmmaker.  I've been making videos for a while, and I even won an award for my first documentary!  Since this winter I've been looking for a unique event to make a documentary about...and one has finally come.

ArtPrize is a unique art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from September 22  to October 10.  It was founded by Rick DeVoss last year, and was a great success!  Over 1000 artists entered their works for the $490,000 in prize money.  The uniqueness of this contest is twofold.  One, it is the largest prize for any art competition in the world!  Two, the winner is determined by popular vote.  Anyone and everyone is encouraged to come to downtown Grand Rapids and vote on their favorite pieces.  The art that was presented ranged from classical to strange, but everyone had a great time.  Here is their website-http://www.artprize.org

Now it's 2010, ArtPrize is come again, and I want to make a documentary about the competition!   The purpose of my film will be to showcase a few local artists who have great talent.  I want to follow the artists from late July to the competition in September.  The art I will be showing will be everything from the sentimental to the fantastic; from oil paintings to giant metal sculptures.  I hope to give viewers something to be proud of, that they belong to the same community as these brilliant people, and can call this great state of Michigan home.

I'm still selecting and contacting artists right now, but I have gotten the go-ahead from the ArtPrize people.

To make this whole project possible, I need a camcorder and sound system, so I'm starting a fundraiser!  If you will donate to my project (suggested $20), I will put your name (or desired message, as long as it is not profane or otherwise unacceptable) into the end-credits of my movie.  The perks of this?  I hope, if all goes according to plan, to enter the film into several film festivals!  Your name could be in front of hundreds of viewers!  Plus, you will be aiding and advancing the arts in West Michigan...pretty cool.

So, now that I've gotten my fund-raising appeal out of the way, let's make a movie!  This blog will be giving updates on the progress of the film, interviews, videos and more!  So, stick around, it'll be fun!
